Reiki is more than a philosophy and even more than a spiritual development system; Reiki is a practical, hands-on way to improve your daily life.
The key phrase here is hands-on, because touch itself is an undervalued part of life. Every time we physically touch another person something special happens, because when we contact physically we also contact emotionally. Just think about the words we use everyday to describe emotional contact: eg it was a touching scene, that really touched me.
Living without touch in our lives is a barren way to live. In practicing Reiki, we always touch others, and ourselves, with respect. We can all become comfortable with touch as part of our lives, and live fuller, richer, lives as a result.
We know that babies who are not touched do not thrive. An article called The Rescuing Hug describes the first week in the lives of a set of twins in their respective incubators, but the weaker twin was not expected to live. A nurse battled the hospital rules to place the babies together in one incubator, where the healthier of the two threw her arm over her weaker sister in a touching embrace. The weaker baby’s heart rate stabilised and her temperature rose to normal. Both babies lived.
As children, we know that a mother’s touch can relieve our pain. Touch can be a sign of affection and of support. We can touch everyone we meet as gracefully and as gently as we would wish to be touched.
